Week Five. Science and Progress-Tony Oursler.

The 3 large sculptures projection is used to create an whole atmosphere in the gallery. The scripts refer to Water, Dust and Mercury and relates that to the flow of humanity.

For the sculpture "Nix" (Water) Oursler uses environmental references in the personification. The sculpture has a melting appearance and the background creates the illusion of light reflecting off water. "Nix" comes from the mythical 'water spirit' who would tempt people into the water and drown them. The idea comes from the speculation that the myth is about water taking revenge.

Mercury has a starry background. The idea of the sculpture is to emphasise the fixation of self-image in a mirror-like approach.

Dust is hung from the ceiling with projections on the walls behind it. The dust suggests raising smoke. As it rotates, eyes, mouths and legs come in and out of appearance above our heads. This may suggest the environment affects us in all ways, from what we see, what we breathe and where we go.

  1. i agree with what you have written here, as Tony oursler does have a tendancy to use personification to create empathy with the viewer and with the sculpture "nix" we see a prime example of this using the reflection of the water to tempt people. I also agree that the dust hanging from the ceiling helps to further the idea that the environment affects us in all ways.

  2. I agree with your words.Tony Oursler work show the relationship between the individual and mass media systems as he is using humor, irony, and imagination. Tony includes
mythological, environmental references in this personification of
the element that cover most of this planet; water.

  3. I agree with what you have said. Tony Oursler uses different materials and environmental resources which you have stated as you talked about the sculpture "Nix". The sculpture "Nix" is almost like an illusion as it tempts viewers to look like water because of the reflection. The idea behind the sculpture is very interesting as it is said to have come from a myth. Oursler's work shows a strong relationship between the different types of media he has used and the methods he has used to produce very environmental work. The dust hanging from the ceiling definitely shows an environmental feeling and like you have said how it affects us in many ways.

  5. In relation to the Enlightenment though Tony Ousler's work has shown great use of science. Aspects of modernism is evident through his use of projectors and light, his interest in the future, the scientific or the technological.

Ideologies of individualism can also be found in his work as projecting features of a human face and in some cases using the environment, we are made to look at ourselves as individuals and as a society as well. That we have self-reliance and the right to make our own personal goals and decisions. An example of this is "Cell Phones Diagrams Cigarettes Searches and Scratch Cards" where a looped projection is played, cigarettes smoldering and polluting our environment. Whether or not we allow this as individuals is a matter to be considered.
