'Cloud Gate' (04-06)
located in Chicago is also named 'The Bean' sculpture because of its bean shape. It is made of stainless steel plates and is seamlessly put together. The work is inspired by liquid mercury and reflects while distorting the city's skyline around it. When standing underneath, a 'concave chamber' is full of multiplying reflections whilst also warping them.

'Svayambh' is a red wax-like block which is installed between the doorway of the gallery. It moves slowly on tracks creating a car-like trail as it squeezes its way through. In Hebrew, adom means red whilst dam means blood. It is like the wall is 'wounded' and the wax represent its blood.

'Shooting into the corner' is a cannon created in co-op with a group of engineers. 11kg balls of wax are shot out using a compressor throughout the exhibition at MAK Vienna. The idea is to produce 'loud aggression yet silent growth' which creates the power and tension.
2.Discuss the large scale site specific work that has been installed on a private site in New Zealand.
Named 'The Farm' after its site, it is installed for permanent existence. The site is 1000 acres. The sculpture is designed to stand up to the high winds which blow in from the Tasman sea so therefore Kapoor has taken in the environment and created something to permanently suit.
3. Where is the Kapoor's work in New Zealand? What are its form and materials? What are the ideas behind the work?
The sculpture has been constructed with a combination of PVC and fabric and structured with steel. Located in Kaipara Bay, it passes between the curves of the hillside. The viewer is faced with a kaleidoscopic view of the Kaipara harbour.
4. Comment on which work by Kapoor is your favourite, and why.
4. Comment on which work by Kapoor is your favourite, and why.
My favourite work is the 'Cloud Gate'. This is Kapoor's most well known and highest valued work. I like how it interacts with the viewer and how it also includes its surroundings at the same time. I think it is a perfect example of how using a space in the right way, can transform it into another world.

I find it very interesting that you mentioned 'the bean' name when talking about the cloud gate in chicago. As when I was there and saw it in real life every second person around me was saying "it looks like a bean!". I find the work you have added which shoots out the 11kg wax balls very cool. I hadn't come accross that work until I saw your blog and find it really unique and interesting so I might research it a little more to find out her ideas and concepts behind it and see if there is anymore similar work. Don't you think that the large scale on 'the farm' is so cool.. and that we actually have a huge Anish Kapoor installation in New Zealand! What a privelage!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you opinions about the work you researched and i researched the same works that you did. My favorite work how ever is the 'shooting into the corner' work. I like how this work changes over a period of time and no one will know how the work will turn out. This work is very unique and the technical aspect of the work also intrigues me, like who could have thought of something like this? I like looking at the artists who don't have a budget because they are pushing the boundaries of art and making it into something amazing. From the works i researched i realised that Kapoor uses the evident colour red throughout a lot of his works. I don't know why he does this but it creates a link between his work. I like how some of his work changes a s time goes on and i think it makes the work more interesting and innovative. i would like to see some of kapoors work in person.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't seen or heard of the work 'Shooting into the corner' before reading your blog, so i appreciate you putting it up because i found it really interesting. I really like Kapoor's public works like "Sky Mirror" and "The Cloud Gate" (also known as the bean). Because It mirrors the city sites, be upside down or a curved image of it, Kapoor gives viewers the oppurtunity to see "the world" in a different way.
ReplyDeleteFor Tom- the colour red is used in Kapoor's work for a few different reasons. I remember these from my research I did of his work.
ReplyDelete- it is the colour of earth and body, including blood and flesh.
-it reflects a deep darkness and mystery, he believes it has more depth than blue or any other colour.
-red is a contradictory colour...it is violent but, on the other hand, is delicate and fragile.
I also researched Kapoors work 'Svayambh'. the title translates loosely to 'born by itself'...German critics associated it with the transport of Jews to the death camps which is a very strong interpretation- apparently it was read very differently depending on where it was exhibited.
I also have a video link of the shooting work on my blog- it is really fast and loud! you should have a look
Can't wait to see his work in person.
I have seen another cannon shooting wax, i saw it at the royal academy in london i think it went off every 20 minutes or so as i recall i notice the one in your image looks different to the one i saw. apart from that i agree with what you said and i also think cloud gate (although i havent seen it in person) is my favourite of kapoors work.
