5. Who would you nominate for this years Walter's Prize, and why? Substantiate you answer by outlining the strengths of the artists work. How does this relate to your interests in art? What aspect of their work is successful in your opinion, in terms of ideas, materials and/or installation of the work?
My favourite was Alex Monteith, Passing Manoeuvre with Two Motorcycles and 584 Vehicles for Two-Channel Video. I thought the video was a good way to demonstrate what happens in our day-to-day lives which in law is illegal, yet we are so oblivious to it and accept it as normal. I am personally interested in cars and bikes so this may have effected my choice although i still think Monteith is a good choice for the Walters prize. I am more digital orientated so I think this is why straight away I was the most interested in this work.

I prefer Fiona Conner's work more than Monteith's work. I think it is because i like how her work involves a large space rather than just displaying her work on a wall. I am more interested in architecture and spacial design rather than film and media. The way Conner's work is constructed and the use of repetition makes it a simple but effective design. I especially like how there are two view points for the display and the how the work is called 'go around the back' viewing the work from one door you can see the other door and it makes you curious if there is something you are missing from the other side. It is quite neat how such a solid structure made out of wood can still contain transparency and you can easily see more viewers at the other door. Conner's work feels like ann obstacle and you feel like you wants go move around it, however you are blocked only allowed to appreciate the construction of the work. I googled some of Conners other work and once again she uses repetition which is a very effective technique i believe for spacial design. I hope she wins as i think her work and talent truly deserves it.
ReplyDeleteAnita! I think its so cool that you said you liked the work because you are interested in cars and motorbikes! That is so true. I really like his work to - I think that it is a very unique concept even though it is actually a very normal thing to see motorcycles surrounded by cars. The way the video is presented almost makes the view feel as if they are in the video - maybe its the scale of the screen or the sound which creates this effect? But I think it is a very powerful peice of work! Also if you are looking at digital design this is a very cool peice of work to keep in mind.. and also maybe research the artist a little more. Becuase you could come up with some cool ideas from studying his work I think. Especially with the very effective use of the 2 cameras.. which can take a while for the audience to figure out! But it is definatley good art if it can make the viewer stand there for a while and want to figure it out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on Alex Montieth for the Walters prize. i also found his choice of medium inspiring and fresh. In particular i like how he included sound i think it created a third dimension that was surprisingly realistic. I also agree with how you said its interesting to observe day to day life from a new perspective.
